Milk thistle is a plant that is native to Europe and was brought to North America by early colonists. Milk thistle is now found throughout the eastern United States, California, and South America. The plant grows up to 2 meters high and has large, bright purple flowers. Milk thistle contains the compound silymarin, a flavonoid thought to have antioxidant properties.
Milk thistle gets its name from the milky sap that comes out of the leaves when they are broken. The leaves also have unique white markings. The name 'Milk-thistle' refers to a legend according to which 3 drops of holy milk from the Virgin's breast is said to have dropped on to the leaf, forever marking it as an herb of the Great Goddess, imbuing it with her qualities.
The silymarin in milk thistle has the potential to lower your fasting blood sugar levels and HbA1c as well as improve insulin sensitivity.
